I know Chana phoned Teddy as soon as I left because he kept texting me. I pictured their conversation. “Theodore, your girl is trippin’.” Okay, maybe Chana wouldn’t say trippin’, but something to that effect.

I didn’t like that she’d talked to me the same way Nana had. Not only that, but she also mentioned that box from my dream, which I had told no one about. That confirmed she knew more about me than she was willing to let on, and though she denied it, she was still my guardian angel.

I lay on top of my comforter, looking at Teddy’s name on my phone as it lit up. I set the phone down. I didn’t respond to him, nor to anyone else’s calls or texts.

“Was your phone dead or something?” Teddy asked the next day.

“No. I was busy.”

“Sure you were. We’re going sledding. Are you in?”

After the last time I went sledding and got dragged into the woods by the Murk, that was the last thing I wanted to do. “I couldn’t if I wanted to. My parents, nor the police, will let me do that. I have to babysit Dingy, anyway.”

“Cool. I’ll meet you over there.”
